Stay 02the Iya Valley · Japan
Deep in Shikoku's lost valley — vine bridges, mist, roads that gave up — this ryokan keeps its best trick out of sight: a private cable car that drops 170 metres through the forest to open-air baths on the river. You ride down in a yukata, soak beside the rapids, and ride back up for dinner. Nowhere else in Japan does arrival better.

Stay 03Matera · Italy
Eighteen candle-lit caves on the edge of Matera's ravine, inhabited for nine thousand years and restored with monastic restraint — stone, linen, firelight, and almost nothing else. Breakfast is served in a deconsecrated rock church. It is the rare hotel that makes doing less feel like the luxury.

Stay 04Pemba Island · Tanzania
Off Zanzibar's quieter sister island floats a small blue platform. Above deck: a sun lounge and a sea-level lounge. Below: a bedroom four metres under the Indian Ocean, where reef fish work the windows all night and squid drift into the underwater lights while you fall asleep. There are a handful of underwater rooms on Earth; this is the one in the wild.

Stay 05Tofino · Canada
Perched on the rocks at the continent's western edge, the Wick invented a season: storm-watching. From November to February you're given rain gear at check-in and a front-row window as Pacific swells detonate against the headland. It's the only hotel we know where guests check the forecast hoping it gets worse — and one of the gems you won't find on booking sites; our desk books it the old way.

Stay 06the Pacuare River · Costa Rica
No road reaches Pacuare Lodge. You check in by white-water raft, paddling through rainforest gorge with your luggage travelling drier than you are, and check out the same way two days later. In between: candle-lit suites above the river, sloths in the canopy, and a zip line to a treetop dinner platform. Arrival stories don't get better.

Stay 07Abel Tasman · New Zealand
There is no road here either — you arrive by water taxi, on foot along the coast track, or across the estuary when the tide allows, which is exactly why Awaroa's golden crescent stays close to empty. The lodge sits just behind the beach in regenerating bush: good food, deep quiet, and a departure time set by the moon.

Stay 08the Sabie River · South Africa
In the 1920s, the Kruger's first visitors slept in train carriages parked overnight on the Selati rail bridge. A century on, Shalati has put the train back: gleaming carriages permanently stationed above the Sabie River, floor-to-glass suites hanging over the water, and a pool cantilevered off the bridge itself. Elephants cross beneath your bed.

Stay 09Udaipur · India
A white marble palace that appears to float in the middle of Lake Pichola — because it fills its island completely, wall to water. Built for a maharana's summers in 1746, reached by private boat, and still run like a royal household. Ask for a lake-facing room and take breakfast on the water; the city drifts by like a painting being unrolled.

Every property on the Waypora list — almost two thousand of them — got there through two decades of trade relationships: places our people have walked, inspected, eaten in and argued about. Nothing arrives by algorithm, and nothing pays to be listed.
Each stay is rated on our own house scale — and the scale measures honesty, not chandeliers. A spotless family-run guesthouse can outrank a tired five-star, and the price is always judged against what the place actually delivers.
In every town on the list, one or two properties carry our Top Pick badge: the place we'd book first, at that budget, without hesitating. Those are the stays the planner reaches for automatically when it builds your trip — priced live for your dates.
